Lighthouse Facts

Lighthouses are widely regarded as places of safety as they are commonly located in in hazardous areas and designed to withstand the most stormy of conditions. For centuries they have been used to safely guide mariners through hazardous stretches of water.

The world's first lighthouse was built approximately 2,300 years ago by the Egyptians. It was called the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria and was constructed on the island of Pharos in Egypt around 270 B.C. to warn ships of the dangerous sandbars off Alexandria.

The Pharos Lighthouse is one of the Seven ancient Wonders of the World. It is also believed to be the tallest lighthouse ever built with an estimated height of more than 400 feet.
